gives us direction when it comes to our speech. It says in the KJV to “Put away from thee a froward mouth…” So what does “froward” mean? Well in the NLT version it says this, “Avoid all perverse talk,…” So does that mean not to talk with a nasty mouth, or to discuss things that you would n0t in a normal setting with your grandmother part your lips to share.
The dictionary definition of froward is, “not easily controlled; stubbornly willful; contrary.” I like this because now I can insert this into the text to see what wisdom with my mouth is all about.
Now I can say, put away from me a mouth that is uncontrollable, put away from me a mouth that is stubbornly willful, or contrary to what is righteous.
So why does this practice benefit me? Why does heeding these words of wisdom do me a favor? The answer to this is in James 3:2 “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.” A man or woman able to control the words that come out of their mouths can direct the paths of there lives in positive ways. For the words you speak create your life, or can destroy it.
